Dealing with bad commenters

It’s a familiar concern when you’re managing a social media presence: what do you do if someone is being nasty?  How do you deal with flamers, trolls, and disgruntled readers?

My usual answer is to ignore them. Let your loyal supporters deal with them for you.  (And, of course, there’s the age-old advice that you should never feed the trolls.)  In the worst case, you might block someone who’s being extremely inappropriate, and delete their comments.

On The Atlantic last week, Rob Lyman shared some ways of dealing with trouble-making commenters more actively.  He explains how to disarm bad commenters, or make them reveal their ignorance without stooping to their level. Some of his tricks even sound like fun.
